But the REAL story involves William Henry Harrison, who ran for the American Presidency back in 1840 against then-President Martin Van Buren. Harrison may have been born in Virginia, but his heart was firmly rooted in Ohio. That being said, his opponents claimed that Harrison would more likely be better off drinking hard cider in a log cabin. Harrison's supporter turned it around for him, making him famous as the log cabin candidate, with his signature image being a log cabin made of buckeye logs. Harrison may have been president for a short period of time, but it could be said that he has made the Buckeye a symbol of victory against adversity he has made it the symbol of a winner.
To be called a buckeye, therefore, is a compliment.
